DANVILLE, Va. — Averett University volleyball picked up a pair of 3-0 victories over Emory & Henry College and randolph College on Sunday during the final day of the 22nd annual Cougar Classic. Averett emerged as the only undefeated squad during the nine-team, two-day event.

Averett (5-0) defeated Emory & Henry 25-23, 25-15 and 28-26 to open its day, and the Cougars finished off the Classic with a three-set win over Randolph 25-23, 25-19 and 25-23.

Junior Hannah Shields was named the Cougar Classic's Most Valuable Player, and she was joined on the all-tournament team by sophomore newcomer Emily Stanley.

In the victory over Emory & Henry, Shields totaled a double-double of 20 kills and 11 digs — both team highs. Junior Sarah Smoot had 15 kills and senior Brittany Daley had seven kills to aid the Cougars' attack. Junior Christiana Summa chipped in with 10 digs and Stanley had eight digs and four service aces. Sophomore Keenan Marks finished with 44 assists and three service aces in the win over the Wasps.

Shields added another 20-kill performance in the nightcap win over Randolph. Smoot had five kills while freshmen Abby Taylor, Brianna Williams and Erin Whitman each had three kills. Stanley led the Cougars with 15 digs, while Williams added four block assists. Marks had 23 assists, while junior Lynsey Corriher had 10 assists and eight digs.

Averett returns to action on Friday at Washington and Lee University's Invitational.
