RALEIGH, N.C. — Averett University volleyball continued its run through conference play, beating William Peace University 3-1 and Methodist University 3-1 on Saturday to extend its winning streak to a program-record 17 games.
Averett (24-2, 11-0 USA South) topped host William Peace to open the day. The Cougars won 25-14, 26-24, 24-26, 25-18. The win tied the program record of 16 wins in a row set by the 1994 team. Senior
Hannah Shields led the Cougars with 18 kills and 15 digs. Senior
Sarah Smoot added 10 kills and senior
Lynsey Corriher finished with nine kills. Sophomore
Brianna Williams added seven kills while hitting .467 for the match. Junior
Keenan Marks and freshman
McKenzie Miller had 27 assists and 19 assists, respectively, with Marks chipping in 10 digs. Junior
Emily Stanley paced Averett with 18 digs, while senior
Christiana Summa added 12 digs.
The Cougars then surpassed the winning streak record with a victory over Methodist later in the day despite dropping the opening set. Averett won 19-25, 25-22, 25-15, 25-15. Shields had another double-double of 19 kills and 10 digs, and Williams added 11 kills and four blocks. Stanley again led the team with 15 digs and Miller had a team-high 18 assists, followed by 17 assists from Marks.
Averett returns to action on Tuesday when it travels to non-conference foe Washington and Lee University at 7 p.m.
