DANVILLE, Va.— The Averett University men's soccer team was defeated by Pfeiffer University in the regular season home finale Wednesday night, 2-1. Senior
Tobias Andreasson scored his fourth goal of the season.
The Falcons came out on the attack from the opening whistle, pressuring the Cougars all over the field. This intensity forced two failed clearances from Averett which resulted in Pfeiffer goals. In the seventh minute of play, a Cougar clearance fell to Jamie Henriquez outside the 18-yard box and he took a touch and then pinged his shot off the crossbar and in. The Falcons doubled their lead three minutes later when Chris Brown jumped on a loose ball in the box to give Pfeiffer the 2-0 lead.
For the remaining of the half, shots were in favor of the Falcons 6-4, but neither team was able to capitalize on their chances. Pfeiffer led 2-0 at the half.
Each side produced their fair share of chances to open the second half, but Averett was the one who found the scoreboard first. In the 57
th minute of play, junior
Felix Squire played a through ball on the far side of the field to Andreasson. On Andreasson's second touch he buried the ball near post to cut the Pfeiffer lead in half.
Throughout the duration of regulation, the Cougars were in desperation mode in trying to find the equalizer. Averett created multiple chances but could not find the back of the net and were defeated by Pfeiffer, 2-1.
The Cougars return to action on Saturday, Oct. 21, when they travel to Demorest, Georgia to take on Piedmont College. Kickoff is scheduled for 2 p.m.
