Volleyball spikes Greensboro on 'Dig Pink' night for 40th consecutive regular season conference win

DANVILLE, Va. — Averett University volleyball bounced conference foe Greensboro College 3-0 during "Dig Pink" on Wednesday night at the Grant Center to run its league winning streak to 40 matches during the regular season.

Averett (28-3, 15-0 USA South) had little trouble with the Pride, winning in three sets by scores of 25-14, 25-18 and 25-14. The Cougars completed a regular season sweep of Greensboro (13-12, 6-8 USA South) after edging the Pride 3-2 on the road on Oct. 5.

The Cougars wore pink warmups and pink accessories during the match as part of its "Dig Pink" match to promote awareness and raise money for cancer research.

Senior Hannah Shields and sophomore Brianna Williams led Averett with 10 kills apiece, while senior Lynsey Corriher added eight kills, including the match-clincher. Junior Keenan Marks finsihed with 17 assists, four service aces and six digs, freshman McKenzie Miller had 15 assists and junior Emily Stanley had six digs. Williams had a team-high four total blocks for the Cougars.

Averett hit .356 as a team, while holding the Pride to a hitting percentage of .000.

The Cougars, who already clinched the 2017 USA South Conference East Division, extended their winning streak to 40 matches against conference opponents during the regular season. At 15-0 this season, Averett went 15-0 during league play last season and won its final 10 regular season games against USA South opponents in 2015.

Averett finishes its regular season on Friday when the Cougars host a USA South tri-match with N.C. Wesleyan College and Pfeiffer University. The Cougars open with N.C. Wesleyan at 3:30 p.m. and finish with Pfeiffer at 7:30 p.m. Senior Night ceremonies will begin prior to the Pfeiffer match.
