GREENSBORO, N.C. — Averett University football crushed conference foe Greensboro College 54-0 in its season finale on Saturday.
Averett (6-4, 6-2 USA South) notched its first shutout since defeating Greensboro 50-0 in in 2010.
Junior running back
Sean Bowman scored a pair of rushing touchdowns early in the first quarter, breaking the program record for career rushing touchdowns set by Kyle Wilson. Bowman's two scored gave him 35 for his career, surpassing Wilson's mark of 33.
Ahead 13-0, Averett added a 45-yard field goal by sophomore Cole Westberry and a 20-yard interception return for touchdown by senior linebacker
Nathaniel Lake to extend the Cougar' lead to 22--0 by the end of the first quarter.
Westberry added a 28-yard field goal midway through the second quarter, and Lake added his second interception of the game, which set up senior quarterback Christian Miles' 30-yard touchdown to Isaiah Grice one play later to give Averett a 33-0 lead entering halftime.
After the break, Miles added two rushing touchdowns — one from 11 yards and one from 1 yard out — to put Averett ahead 47-0. Freshman running back Denarius Hilton scored from 7 yards out to make it 54-0 late in the third quarter.
Averett's defense shut Greensboro (1-9, 0-8 USA South) down, limiting the Pride to just 85 yards of total offense. Junior linebacker
Dejon Brooks led the Cougars with 10 tackles, including one sack.
The 54-point margin is the largest margin of victory by the Cougars in program history in the program's 18-season history.
