DANVILLE, Va. — A big run at the start of the second half helped Concordia University Texas pull away to a 91-68 win over Averett University in non-conference men's basketball action Sunday afternoon at the Grant Center.
Averett (1-1) led 30-27 with under two minutes to play in the first half before Concordia Texas (2-1) finished the period with an 8-0 run to take a 35-30 advantage into the break.
Although the Cougars scored first to start the second half, Concordia Texas rattled off a 16-0 run over the next four minutes to take control, 51-32. The Tornados lead grew to as much as 25 down the stretch to help seal the game.
Freshman Montre' Cash led Averett with career-highs 22 points and seven rebounds in his second collegiate game. Cash shot 10-for-15 for the game. Senior James Contreras Jr. added 15 points and three assists.
The Cougars opened the game on a strong note, jumping out to a 12-4 lead in the first five minutes. That margin grew to 10 midway through the half until Concordia Texas caught up and tied the game 24-24 with 5:31 left in the period and eventually took the lead by halftime.
Ephram Price III had a team-high 18 points for Concordia Texas, which picked up a win at No. 18 Guilford College on Friday.
Averett travels to nationally-ranked Guilford on Tuesday for a 5 p.m. tip.
