DANVILLE, Va. — The Averett University women's basketball team steamrolled past Hollins University 79-32 on Tuesday night in non-conference action. Four Cougars finished in double figures with junior Ravyn Johnson recording a double-double with 10 points and a career-high 10 rebounds.
Â
Averett jumped out to an 8-2 lead to start the game which forced Hollins head coach Jenny Logan to call a timeout. The Cougars kept their foot on the accelerator and went on an 11-2 run out of the timeout to lead at the end of the first quarter, 19-4.
Â
In the second quarter, the Cougars were able to hold Hollins to five points while on the other end were getting to the paint at will. In fact, Averett made seven layups and six free throws to build upon their lead with the navy and gold leading at the half, 45-9.
Â
Averett held onto their substantial lead in the second half, not letting Hollins cut their advantage to within 30 points. The bench play played a key role in this as the Cougars bench outscored that of Hollins, 25-9 on the night. Sophomore Kiara Smith finished the game with career-highs of nine points and eight rebounds while senior Hailey Chandler increased her career high in rebounds to seven. Â
Â
The Cougars forced Hollins to commit 21 turnovers on the night which turned into 33 Averett points. This high pressure on defense sparked the Cougar offense to score 79 points for the second consecutive game.
Â
Averett returns to action on Wednesday, Nov. 29, when they play host to Emory and Henry College. Tip-off is set for 7:30 p.m.
