Chandler scores 32 in women's basketball loss to Maryville at East-West Classic

MARYVILLE, Tenn. — Senior Samm Chandler scored 32 points, but it wasn't enough as the Averett University women's basketball team fell 88-79 to host Maryville College on Sunday afternoon at the East-West Classic.

The difference for Maryville (4-6) ultimately was the second quarter. Averett (3-5), which led 28-24 at the end of the first quarter, pulled ahead by as many as five points several times during the frame. However, the Scots battled back to tie the game at 45-45 with 2:08 to go in the half and finished the period on an 11-1 run to go ahead 51-46 at the break.

After Maryville extended its lead to nine points in the third quarter, Averett closed the gap to one when junior Alixis Roccia made a layup in the paint from an assist by sophomore Ravyn Johnson with 2:18 on the clock in the frame. Unfortunately for the Cougars, every time they began to cut the lead down, the Scots would find a way to hold them off. Maryville pushed its lead to as much as 18 in the fourth quarter, and although Averett trimmed its deficit down to single digits, the Cougars ran out of time on a comeback attempt.

Maryville shot 50 percent from the field with three players in the double-figures, and the Scots managed to work in the paint scoring 46 points — over half its total from the inside.

Chandler's 32 points pushed her past Pam Dabbs for second on Averett's all-time scoring list. In addition to her fifth career game of 30 points or more, Chandler also blocked three shots to pull within six of Michelle Warner's career mark of 91 blocks, which is the program's record.

Sophomore Brooke Carthon added 13 points and eight rebounds and junior Amani Ajayi finished with 12 points and nine rebounds.

Averett returns to action on Wednesday when it travels to Lynchburg, Virginia, to face non-conference foe Randolph College at 2 p.m.
