DANVILLE, Va. — Roanoke College scored seven runs over the final three innings to steal a 13-9 non-conference win over Averett University's baseball team on Wednesday afternoon at Owen-Fulton Field.
Averett (1-3) looked sharp early, racing to a 7-0 lead after two innings. Sophomore
A.J. Hart's two-run single got the Cougars going, and they added two more runs in the first frame. Averett tacked on three more runs the next inning to build the early cushion. Roanoke (3-1), however, battled back to get within 7-6 after a three-run third and a three-run fifth inning.
The Cougars got two of the runs back in the sixth on an RBI double by freshman
Chase McKinney and Hart's RBI groundout to extend their lead to 9-6. Yet, the Maroons answered with three runs in the seventh to tie the game. Roanoke snagged its first lead with three more runs in the eighth and added another in the ninth to pull away.
McKinney led Averett's offense with a 3-for-5 day at the plate with three runs scored. Junior
Dallas Smithers, Hard and sophomore
Matt Tuggle each had two hits, and Hart finished with a team-high three RBIs. As a team, the Cougars had a season-high 12 hits.
Averett hosts Marymount University for a 12 p.m. doubleheader on Saturday.
