DANVILLE, Va. – Greensboro College secured a 61-55 conference win over the Averett University women's basketball team on Saturday afternoon at the Grant Center.

Sophomore forward
Amani Ajayi helped Averett (13-8, 6-4 USA South) get off to a decent start with six points in the first quarter, but Greensboro (12-9, 8-3 USA South) still managed to take an eight-point lead by the end of the period.
Â
The Cougars continued to pound away at the Pride's advantage. Unfortunately, Averett couldn't find a way to get over the hump. With 21 seconds left in regulation, senior guard
DaQuila Washington found
Frida Lundquist at the top of the key on an inbound play for a 3-pointer that put the Cougars within three points (56-53). As time ticked away, the Cougars were forced to foul to stop the clock, and despite Lundquist connecting on the opposite end for a quick layup, Greensboro went 5-for-5 from the free throw line in the last 19 seconds, stealing the Cougars' chance for a comeback victory.
Â
Lundquist paced Averett with 15 points as Ajayi followed with 10 points, nine rebounds and three steals. Junior shooting guard
Samm Chandler finished with nine points and eight boards while junior guard
Joelle Deese added 10 rebounds and four steals.
Â
Averett returns to action Sunday, Feb. 5, to host William Peace University in conference play at 2 p.m.
