GREENSBORO, N.C. — Senior
Charles Bryant scored 20 points and grabbed 17 rebounds to help Averett University men's basketball edge conference foe Greensboro College 70-67 on the road Sunday.
Bryant came up big, especially in the final minutes for Averett (9-13, 7-4 USA South). With Greensboro (13-8, 7-4 USA South) leading 67-65, Bryant's layup tied the game with 1:03 to play. He came up with a crucial defensive rebound at the other end, then was fouled after snagging an offensive rebound with 38 seconds to play.
Bryant hit one of two free throws to give Averett a 68-57 lead. Once again, Bryant came through with a clutch defensive rebound on Greensboro's ensuing possession. The senior was fouled immediately, and Bryant calmly sank both free throws to increase the Cougars' lead to three.
Greensboro's Joseph Gatling got off two errant looks from beyond the arc, the second of which was knocked out of bounds with 1.3 seconds to play. After each team traded timeouts, the Pride once again went to Gatling for another 3-point attempt, but it clanked off the iron as Averett escaped with the valuable conference road victory.
Bryant's double-double was his 11th of the season, and his 17 boards matched his career high set two weeks ago against N.C. Wesleyan College. He also moved within 17 rebounds of Averett's career rebounding mark of 848 held by DeMarcus Morrison. Bryant also leapfrogged Jonathan Rumley and Jay Tate on Averett's all-time scoring list, moving into sixth place with 1,199 career points.
Greensboro enjoyed the early lead before Averett rallied to take control midway through the first half while taking a 42-31 advantage into halftime.
The Pride didn't go quietly, chipping away its deficit down the stretch and eventually taking a 61-60 lead with 4:36 to play. Greensboro inched ahead 67-62 on Hamilton Hawkins' jumper, but junior
Darin Ketner answered with a 3-pointer to close the gap before Bryant tied it up with just over a minute to play.
With the win, Averett is tied with Greensboro for second in the USA South Conference standings, a game behind Methodist University for the top spot.
In addition to Bryant's big game, Averett got 18 points and four assists from junior
James Contreras Jr., 14 points from sophomore
Jalen Burnett and 12 points off the bench from Ketner.
Gatling led Greensboro with 17 points.
Averett travels to Covenant College for another conference road game on Saturday.
