ROCKY MOUNT, N.C. – The Averett University softball team suffered two conference losses to N.C. Wesleyan College on Tuesday afternoon at Edge Field.

In the first game, N.C. Wesleyan (10-14, 6-6 USA South) scored four runs in the bottom of the second inning to get ahead of the Cougars early on. Averett (15-15, 7-5 USA South) responded with three runs of its own in the third frame. Senior shortstop
Jessica Long nailed an RBI triple to right center and senior outfielder
Samantha Hall singled to shortstop to run in Long.

With two outs, freshman
Casey Cook doubled to left center that sent Hall home and close the gap to one as the Cougars still trailed 4-3.

N.C. Wesleyan's Shelby Godwin hit a 2 RBI double to right field to go with another score to lead 7-3. The Cougars tried to make a comeback and got within one but were unable to pull it out.

In the second game, Averett got on the board first with one run in the fifth inning and maintained the lead with
Breanna Murphy's single to right field. Unfortunately for Averett, N.C. Wesleyan doubled to left field and later hit a 2 RBI single to snag the win.

Averett returns to action on Saturday when it hosts Maryville College in a conference doubleheader at Cougar Field at 1 p.m.Â
