Box Score 2 GREENSBORO, N.C. — The Averett University baseball team split a conference doubleheader with Greensboro College on Saturday afternoon at Ted Leonard Park. Averett's offense drove them to a 5-3 victory in the opener before falling in a tough one 5-4 in the second game.
In Game 1, Greensboro (19-10, 7-5 USA South) got on the board first scoring three runs in the fourth inning behind Nick Corey's single to right field recording one of the three tally's.
Averett (6-21, 2-10 USA South) responded back recording three of their own runs in the sixth inning. The scoring rally started with junior
Dallas Smithers single up the middle to make it 3-1, sophomore
A.J. Hart followed that by singling to right field adding one 3-2. Smithers tied the game when he stole home to put the Cougars back at an even draw.
Senior
Hunter Ashworth put the Cougars up by one when he singled to center field. Averett's defense held the Pride to zero runs in the remaining of the game. The Cougars scored there last run on a fielding error to give the Cougars the win.
Ashworth and Hart each led the Cougars with three hits, junior
Bradley Tickle and Smithers each followed with one hit apiece.
The Cougars scored first in game 2 following Smithers sacrifice fly scoring freshman
Chase McKinney. Freshman
Zack DeCarlo followed suit in the next inning scoring senior
Trey Wall. Greensboro scored five runs over the course of four innings to give them the lead 5-2. The Cougars answered back with two runs of their own in the ninth inning but it wasn't enough to give the Pride the win.
Tickle and Wall each led with three hits, Hart produced two hits, sophomore
Matt Tuggle, McKinney, and sophomore
Corey Wall each had one hit apiece.
