HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, Va. — Averett University baseball split a non-conference doubleheader with Hampden-Sydney College on Saturday afternoon. Averett dominated the Tigers 11-0 in the opener before falling 5-0 in the second game.
In Game 1, Averett (3-10) jumped on Hampden-Sydney (7-3) for three runs in the first inning. Sophomore

That was more than enough runs for senior left-hander
Cody Johnson, who tossed a three-hit complete game shutout in seven innings.
Averett's offense continued to shine as the Cougars added two more runs in the third and four runs in the fifth, including a three run double by sophomore
Matt Tuggle. The Cougars tacked on two additional insurance to pull away in the seventh inning.
Five Cougars finished with multiple hits in the win, including three each by Tickle and Tuggle.
In the nightcap, Hampden-Sydney right-hander Chase Mayberry kept the Averett offense in check. He allowed only two hits and struck out nine in seven innings.
Although Averett limited Hampden-Sydney to just four hits, the Tigers found ways to score. A balk gave Hampden-Sydney a 1-0 lead in the third inning, the Tigers added four more runs in the fifth inning.
Freshmen

Chase McKinney had the Cougars' lone hits in Game 2.
