DANVILLE, Va. — Averett University baseball dropped its series finale with non-conference foe Penn State University Harrisburg 6-2 on Monday at Owen-Fulton Field.
Walks got Averett (4-12) in trouble multiple times, beginning in the second inning. The Cougars gave up a pair of leadoff walks, and a wild pitch moved both runners into scoring position. Chris Iocca eventually scored on a groundout to the right side, and Jackson Struve's single scored Scott Angstadt to put Penn State Harrisburg (3-10) in front 2-0.

Penn State Harrisburg added three more insurance runs in the fourth to extend its lead to 5-1. Once again, a pair of leadoff walks got things going for the Lions.
Although the Cougars got a strikeout, two more walks followed — the second of which brought home a run with the bases loaded. David Klein tacked on two more runs with his two-run single up the middle.
Averett trimmed its deficit to 5-2 in the bottom of the eighth on sophomore
A.J. Hart's RBI double to deep left field, but Penn State Harrisburg answered with a run in the top of the ninth with Ethan Kell's pinch-hit RBI single.
The Cougars got two runners on in the ninth but the Lions closed it out. Averett left 10 runners on base overall.
Averett returns to action on Saturday when the Cougars host conference foe Maryville College for a noon doubleheader to begin their three-game series.
