DANVILLE, Va. — The Averett University baseball team fell to Ferrum College 9-1 on Senior Day in the finale to claim the conference series on Sunday afternoon at Owen-Fulton Field.
Averett (9-26, 4-14 USA South) started off strong in the second inning when junior
Dallas Smithers hit a double to the left side. Next, senior
Trey Wall singled over second base to bring in Smithers for an early 1-0 lead.
Ferrum (20-14, 13-5 USA South) moved ahead in the top of the third to respond. Kyle Anstice ignited the rally with a single to the left side. Ferrum added two more runs in the seventh inning after Anstice and Brandon West each hit a single, and the Panthers continued to tack on runs.
Despite the loss, the Cougars managed to record five hits as Wall led the team with two singles.
Prior to the game, Averett honored its six seniors, including pitchers
Chris Campbell,
James Culbreth and
Cody Johnson along with Wall, second basemen
Hunter Ashworth, and utility player
KJ Graham. Graham finished the day with a stolen base.
