ASHLAND, Va. — Averett University softball fell 3-0 to No. 1 ranked Virginia Wesleyan College in the NCAA Regional on Sunday in Ashland.
Averett (29-19) awaits the winner between host Randolph-Macon College and Franklin & Marshall College. That winner will play the Cougars in an elimination game at 4 p.m. Sunday.
Virginia Wesleyan (45-2) opened the top of the first with back-to-back hits, the second of which was an RBI double to give the Marlins a 1-0 advantage.
Averett freshman
Kaitlyn Aherron kept Virginia Wesleyan's offense at bay and didn't allow another hit until back-to-back RBI hits in the sixth, which extended the Marlins' lead to 3-0.
"I thought it was a really good game," Averett first-year head coach
Ashley Pyron said. "Virginia Wesleyan played a great game and it came down to a couple of hits and that's all it took."
The Cougars, facing Virginia Wesleyan ace Hanna Hull, were limited to two hits. Aherron and senior
Samantha Hall each had a hit for Averett.
Aherron (16-9) had a solid performance in the circle, allowing just four hits while striking out eight.
The loss snapped Averett's 10-game winning streak.
