DANVILLE, Va.— A pair of second half goals from sophomore
Daniel Surley and junior
David Cuperman helped pace the Averett University men's soccer team to a 2-2 in overtime on the road against Hampden-Sydney College Friday night. The game was halted during the first overtime due to a power outage, ending the game in a tie.
The Tigers controlled the first 20 minutes of the match, creating three corners and a chance on net. The Cougars found their offense quickly after that by generating two corners themselves and three shots on goal that forced saves from the Hampden-Sydney goalkeeper.
In the 43
rd minute, Hampden-Sydney took the lead with a goal off the foot of Ryan Killen. The Tigers led at the half, 1-0.
The first 10 minutes of the second half showed some back and forth action. However, the Cougars were the ones that were able to capitalize, leveling the match at one with a tally from Surley.
Averett kept their foot on the gas looking for their first lead of the season, but to no avail. The Tigers, in the 80th minute, snatched the lead back from Averett with a goal from Eli Strong. The Cougars were not fazed by the late goal and that showed as the navy and gold were able to produce a scoring chance four minutes later that ended with Cuperman slotting home his strike to bring the match back to even.
Each team was unable to register another tally before the end of regulation and the game entered overtime. However, just about three minutes into the first overtime period, an extended power outage forced the game to be called as a draw.
The Cougars are back in action next Wednesday, Sept. 6, when they travel to Virginia Beach, Virginia, to take on Virginia Wesleyan University. Kickoff is set for 6 p.m.
