DANVILLE, Va.— The Averett University men's soccer team (2-3-1) fell to Maryville College in double overtime, 3-2 Sunday afternoon. Junior
David Cuperman recorded a brace in the effort.
Maryville was all over the Cougars in the first 20 minutes of the match and it showed as the Scots created five scoring opportunities while Averett could only muster up one shot in that time frame. However, in the 22nd minute, the Cougars received a free kick right outside the Maryville 18-yard box and Cuperman tucked his strike inside the far post to give Averett the 1-0 lead.
After the Cougar goal, each side limited the other's scoring chances and Averett led 1-0 heading into halftime.
The Scots brought the game level in the 51
st minute of the match. A cross from the near sideline deflected off a Cougar defender and past sophomore goalkeeper
Austin Bramhall for an own goal. The Cougars got right back on the attack and scored another go ahead goal just three minutes later. Cuperman dribbled the ball with pace to the top of the box and through a few Maryville defenders before ripping his shot into the side netting on the far post.
Averett weathered the Maryville attack for the next 15 minutes as the Scots were looking to bring the game even. In the 70
th minute of the match a failed clearance from Averett forced a Cougar defender to commit a foul inside his own 18-yard box. Andrew Sullivan took the PK attempt for Maryville and had his shot saved by Bramhall before he cleaned up the rebound to tie the game at two.
Both sides traded chances in the remaining time of regulation, but to no avail as the game entered overtime.
In the first overtime, each side was playing more of a conservative game and struggled to find any offensive rhythm. The second overtime, though, was much different from the first overtime period in that each team traded chances back and forth. The Scots eventually capitalized on their chances in the 109
th minute. Milan Card belted a shot on the far side of the field that pinged off the cross bar. The rebound fell right to Randy Reichenberger who struck the ball home to give his team the victory, 3-2.
Averett is back on the pitch this Thursday, Sept. 21, when they travel to take on Greensboro College. Kickoff is scheduled for 3 p.m.
