Volleyball continues dominance, goes unbeaten in Cougar Classic

DANVILLE, Va. — The Averett University volleyball team (4-0) continued their dominance in day two of the 23rd annual Cougar Classic by defeating Roanoke College 3-0 and Guilford College 3-0. Sophomore Brianna Williams and senior Hannah Shields each earned a spot on the Cougar Classic All-Tournament Team, with Williams claiming the MVP.

The Cougars (4-0) raced past Roanoke (2-2) in the first game of the day, winning 25-13, 25-18, 25-14. Offensively, the Cougars were led by Shields and freshman Brooke Aaron who finished with 12 and seven kills respectively. Junior Keenan Marks recorded 16 assists while freshman McKenzie Miller tallied 14. Miller also helped her team out at the service line by registering six service aces. Defensively, Shields and Marks each finished the match with eight digs.

Averett carried this momentum into their last match of the weekend in which they knocked off Guilford College (3-1) in three sets (25-17, 25-20, 25-23). The Cougars held the Quakers at bay in the first two sets, never relinquishing control of the lead. However, in set three Guilford College stepped up their game and eventually built a 19-14 lead that forced a timeout from head coach Danny Miller. After the timeout, Averett found their rhythm and went on an 11-4 run to seal the victory and the clean sweep on the weekend.

Shields led the way for the navy and gold, completing the match with 17 kills and 13 digs. Marks had a team high 21 assists with Miller complementing that with a career high 17 assists.

Averett is back in action this Tuesday, Sept. 5, when it plays host to Virginia Wesleyan University in a non-conference tilt. First serve is scheduled for 7 p.m.
