Men's soccer plays Covenant to a 2-2 draw

DANVILLE, Va.— The Averett University men's soccer (2-4-2) played a 2-2 draw against Covenant College on Saturday afternoon. Junior David Cuperman tallied a goal in the effort which marks his fourth goal in the past two matches.

Junior Huso Dukic gave the navy and gold the early lead with his goal in the 8th minute of play. The Jacksonville, Florida native stole a backwards pass and beat the Scot keeper one-on-one to propel his team the 1-0 lead. The Cougars kept the pressure on the Covenant back line and it paid off as Averett doubled their lead in the 14th minute. Cuperman dribbled the ball towards the near side of the 18-yard box. The Bogota, Colombia product beat three Scot defenders before putting his shot past the Covenant keeper near post for his eighth goal of the season.

Covenant started to pick up their own offensive pressure by creating a shot on net and receiving two corner kicks in the process. The Scots found the scoreboard in the 32nd minute when Connor McGimsey served a ball into the box that the Cougar defense cleared to an unmarked Seth Robinson. Robinson chested the ball and in one motion played a ball to Josiah McDaniel who beat freshman goalkeeper Marius Olavesen to cut the Cougar lead to one.

Neither side could find the back of the net for the duration of the first half. Averett led 2-1 at halftime.

The shot total in the second half was tightly contested with the Cougars having the slight edge at 9-8. Covenant, though, was the side who was able to convert on one of these scoring opportunities and this occurred in the 88th minute of play. Josh Brower played a through ball to Carl Simakoff who struck his shot inside the far post to tie the game at two. Junior Felix Squire put a shot on net in the 90th minute that Jonathan Crossman saved and the game entered overtime.

Averett outshot the Scots in each overtime period, but were unable to capitalize on these scoring chances and the game ended in a draw.

The Cougars are back on the pitch Tuesday, Sept. 26, when they travel to take on Bridgewater College. Kickoff is scheduled for 4 p.m.
