FREDERICKSBURG, Va. — Averett University volleyball went 1-1 on the first day of its tournament at the University of Mary Washington on Friday. The Cougars suffered their first loss of the season to Johns Hopkins University, 3-0, before taking down Susquehanna University 3-1 to finish the day.
Averett (6-1) faced off against a tough Johns Hopkins squad which is receiving votes in the latest American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Top 25. Johns Hopkins won 25-22, 25-15, 25-22.
The Cougars then faced Susquehanna. After falling 25-23 in the first set, Averett took the next three sets — 25-18, 25-18, 25-18 — to bounce back strong from its first loss of the season.

Averett faces No. 7 Mary Washington and Randolph-Macon College, which is also receiving votes in the AVCA Top 25, on Saturday at 12 p.m. and 2 p.m., respectively.
