RALEIGH, N.C. — The Averett University women's basketball team sailed to a 76-47 conference win over Meredith College on Sunday afternoon at Weatherspoon Gym.

Meredith (3-14, 3-6 USA South) led the way in the first quarter 15-12 over Averett shooting 50 percent from the field. Â In the second quarter Averett (10-7, 7-2 USA South) made a run and took the lead with a layup from junior guard Shannon Longworth. Â The Cougars were in front by ten points of the Avenging Angles from a layup by senior shooting guard Samm Chandler to go into halftime 33-23.

After the break, junior guard Brooke Carthon extended the Cougars' advantage with a layup to put Averett up 35-23 two minutes into the third quarter. The Avenging Angles would manage put in a few baskets, but the Cougars would answer on the opposite end. In the fourth quarter with 3:17 remaining Longworth gave Averett the largest lead of the night by 30-points on a good free throw (72-42).

Junior forward Amani Ajayi paces the Cougars with 16 points and seven rebounds. Longworth added 13 points as Chandler and Carthon each followed with 11 apiece. Sophomore forward Ravyn Johnson finished with a double-double of 11 point and 12 rebounds.Â

Chandler Hines led the Avenging Angels with 12 points. Â

Averett returns to action this week with a conference matchup against Methodist University at home on Wednesday, January, 24 at 5:30 p.m.
