Women's basketball crushes Mary Baldwin, ties program record with sixth consecutive win

DANVILLE, Va. — Averett University women's basketball tied its program record for consecutive wins as the Cougars notched their sixth victory in a row by cruising past Mary Baldwin University 78-38 on Tuesday night at the Grant Center.

Averett (14-7, 10-2 USA South) used a 10-0 spurt to pull away from Mary Baldwin (1-19, 0-12 USA South) midway through the first quarter as the Cougars built a 22-7 lead with 2:55 left in the frame. That proved to be plenty of cushion for Averett against their USA South Conference counterpart.

The Cougars, who enjoyed a 47-28 halftime lead, led by as many as 40 points in the second half. Averett dominated the boards, snagging a season-high 78 rebounds — just nine shy of the program's single-game record.

Senior Samm Chandler led all scorers with 18 points and sophomores Brooke Carthon and Kiara Smith each finished with a double-double. Carthon totaled 16 points and 13 rebounds, while Smith had 11 points and a career-best 10 boards. Junior Shannon Longworth and sophomore Ravyn Johnson each had nine points, and Johnson added 11 rebounds. Junior Amani Ajayi finished with 12 rebounds and junior Alixis Roccia had 10 rebounds and five assists.

With six wins in a row, the 2017-18 squad matched the 2009-10 team, which also won six consecutive games.

Averett will see Mary Baldwin again on Thursday when the two face off in Staunton at 5:30 p.m.
