DANVILLE, Va. — Four first half goals from N.C. Wesleyan College proved to be too tough for the Averett University men's soccer team to overcome, as the Cougars fell, 4-0, on the road on Wednesday.
N.C. Wesleyan (6-4-1, 6-1-1 USA South) outshot Averett (2-12-1, 0-7-1 USA South) 17-3 on the game and ultimately dominated possession, particularly in the first half. Freshman
Johnny Kummander led the team with two shots, while senior
Jake Searcy registered the team's only shot on goal. Junior
Austin Bramhall made five saves in the first half before sophomore
Colton Dutchess replaced him in the second half, as Dutchess made three saves and allowed zero goals in the second half.
Averett's rough start saw N.C. Wesleyan score two goals in the first seven minutes of the game, with Dominique Giovanni scoring in the second minute of the assist from Aly Cadet and Cadet scoring in the seventh minute off the assist from Aazah Daniel. Not long after, Daniel got a goal for himself with Cadet getting his second assist of the game. Later, Cadribo Godfrey logged N.C. Wesleyan's fourth goal of the half in the 36th minute, as the Battling Bishops maintained a 4-0 lead heading into halftime.
The Cougars kept it much more competitive in the second half, not allowing a goal and moving the ball well to create more offensive possessions across midfield. Unfortunately for Averett, the stout N.C. Wesleyan defense prevented the Cougars from capitalizing.
This marked the end of a three-game road slate for Averett, who will play its final three games of the regular season at home, starting with LaGrange College on Saturday at 11 a.m.
