Volleyball sweeps Greensboro to conclude regular season conference play

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. — In its final USA South Conference matchup of the regular season, the Averett University volleyball team swept Greensboro College, 3-0, on the road on Wednesday night.

Greensboro (4-20, 3-11 USA South) played it close throughout the first set, jumping out to a 5-2 lead early, but Averett (14-12, 10-6 USA South) battled back and went on a 5-0 run later to take a 19-14 lead, its largest lead of the set. The Pride made it tough, but the Cougars ultimately maintained the lead to win the first set, 25-22.

The second set also started off close, but Averett busted off two more 5-0 runs, the first to give it an 18-10 lead, and the second to end the set with a 25-16 victory. The Cougars fell in a 7-3 hole to start the third set, but rattled off a 5-1 run to tie the game at 8-8 and followed that up with yet another 5-0 run shortly thereafter to take a 13-10 lead at the halfway point in the set. Averett didn't relinquish the lead for the rest of the set, taking Set 3, 25-21, to complete its second sweep over Greensboro of the 2018 season.

Senior Keenan Marks tallied a double-double for the Cougars, leading the team with 11 kills and 18 assists. Junior Madison Dadez also notched double-digit kills with 10 and hit .563 on the night. Sophomore McKenzie Miller logged a double-double as well, recording 17 assists and 11 digs. Senior Emily Stanley led the team with 15 digs, while sophomore Brooke Aaron was right behind her with 14 digs and eight kills.

To close out its regular season, Averett travels to Newport News, Va. for the Christopher Newport University Invitational. On Oct. 26, it will take on Berry College at 5 p.m. and Virginia Wesleyan University at 7 p.m., and it will face Christopher Newport University on Oct. 27 at noon in its regular season finale.
