NEWPORT NEWS, Va. — In the final match of its regular season, the Averett University volleyball team lost to No. 23 Christopher Newport University on the road on Saturday, 3-0.
This marked the final match of the Christopher Newport University Invitational for Averett (15-14, 10-6 USA South), as the Cougars went 1-2 overall in the tournament.
Averett made things interesting in the first set, keeping it competitive and jumping out to a 9-8 lead early on. However, it didn't take long for Christopher Newport (22-5) to regain the lead and it didn't look back from there, as the Cougars lost the first set, 25-21.
The second set wasn't as close, as the nationally ranked Captains took a 12-6 lead to start the set and pulled away even further from there, ending the set on a 13-2 run as Averett dropped Set 2, 25-8. Christopher Newport built off this momentum to pull away and win Set 3, 25-15, to complete the 3-0 sweep.
