BRIDGEWATER, Va. — Averett University volleyball lost 3-0 at Bridgewater College in non-conference action on Friday night. The Eagles won 25-19, 25-20 and 25-19.
Averett (8-9) and Bridgewater (15-4) battled in tight sets throughout, but it was late runs by the Eagles in all three sets that proved to be the difference. In the first game, the two teams were tied 15-15 before Bridgewater inched ahead 20-18. The Eagles then took a 1-0 lead in the match by winning five of the next six points. Set 2 was nearly identical. The Cougars and Eagles were knotted 18-18 before Bridgewater ended the frame with a 5-2 run.
The Cougars jumped out to a quick 5-1 lead in Set 3 and built a 15-11 advantage. Yet, Bridgewater answered with an 11-1 run to help seize control and take the match in three sets.
Sophomore
Brooke Aaron led the Averett attack with 10 kills to go with nine digs. Junior
Madison Dadez had six kills with a .364 hitting percentage and two blocks. Senior
Emily Stanley had a team-high 11 digs and senior
Keenan Marks made a team-best 23 assists. The Cougars also got six kills each from senior
Jordan Pitzer and sophomore
McKenzie Miller. Pitzer also finished with seven digs.
Averett plays again on Wednesday when the Cougars travel to play conference foe Meredith College.
