DECATUR, Ga. — The Averett University women's basketball team overcame a 17-12 first quarter deficit to pick up a 48-42 win in the team's season opener Saturday afternoon against Agnes Scott.
Averett (1-0) fell behind early following the first quarter, however a 13-10 advantage in the second quarter pulled the Cougars within two-points of the Scotties at 27-25 at the halftime break. A seven point third quarter performance by junior
Kiara Smith gave the Cougars a slight 41-38 advantage heading into the final quarter of play. Averett outscored Agnes Scott (0-1) 7-4 over the final 10 minutes of play to take the victory.

Brooke Carthon paced the Cougars on the evening finishing with 19 points from the floor, 10 rebounds, seven of which came on the offensive side of the court and five steals in the effort. Smith added 11 points and four rebounds, while senior
Amani Ajayi and junior
Ravyn Johnson each finished with double-digit rebounds, hauling in 11 and 12 boards, respectively.
Garis Grant led the charge for the Scotties offensively scoring 13 points and adding 12 rebounds, while Kalin Smith finished second on the team with eight points and six boards.
Averett finished the evening with a 53-44 rebound advantage adding five blocks and 15 steals for the game.
The Cougars return back to action Sunday, Nov. 11 when they tangle with Piedmont College in the final game of the Agnes Scott Tip-Off Classic at 2 p.m.
