DANVILLE, Va. — Seniors
Sean Bowman and
Dejon Brooks set records as Averett University football defeated conference foe Brevard College 25-6 to celebrate Senior Day Saturday on Daly Field at Frank R. Campbell Stadium.
Averett (6-2, 5-1 USA South) shut Brevard (2-6, 2-4 USA South) out until a late touchdown in the final seconds of the fourth quarter. The Cougars' defense terrorized the Tornados all night, recording five sacks and five quarterback hurries while forcing one interception.
That defensive pressure began on Brevard's first drive. Backed up on their own goal line, quarterback Dalton Cole fumbled the snap. Although he gathered it back up and looked to pass, Averett junior defensive end
Romello Herbin was there for the sack in the end zone for a safety to put the Cougars ahead 2-0 early.
On Averett's ensuing possession, Bowman made history. Set up by back-to-back 20-plus-yard runs, Bowman eventually scored from 1-yard out for his 41st career rushing touchdown — a new USA South Conference record — to put Averett ahead 8-0 with 9:51 to go in the first quarter.
After the Cougars made it 15-0 on junior quarterback
Jacob Wright's 5-yard touchdown run with 6:12 to play in the second quarter, it was Brooks' turn to make history.
On Brevard's next drive, the Tornados were in Averett territory when Brooks sacked Cole on third-and-8 from the Cougars' 25-yard line, which matched the Averett program record for career sacks. The tie didn't last long. Brooks broke the mark on the very next play, sacking Cole again as Brevard went for it on fourth down.
Brooks led Averett with 12 tackles, including three sacks and three quarterback hurries.Â
With the defense playing well, Averett added a 23-yard field goal by junior
Cole Westberry in the third quarter, and Wright found senior receiver
Oran Davis for a 19-yard touchdown early in the fourth quarter to give the Cougars a comfortable 25-0 advantage.
Brevard's only points came on 1-yard touchdown pass from Cole to Tyler Gregory with 10 seconds to play in the game. Averett sophomore
Maleek Pulliam blocked the extra point attempt.
The Averett defense, which held the Tornados to just 65 net rushing yards, also got nine tackles each from Herbin and senior cornerback
Bradley Jefferson, plus eight tackles from senior linebacker
Seth Brendle and seven tackles, two pass breakups and an interception from senior safety
Octavius Ross.
Wright led the offense with 189 passing yards, 146 rushing yards and two total touchdowns. Bowman added 77 yards on the ground, while senior receiver
Rayvon Johnson caught a team-high six pass for 77 yards.
Prior to the game, Averett honored its 24 senior football players, two senior cheerleaders and two senior student athletic trainers.
