DANVILLE, Va. — Four Cougars scored in double figures as Averett University men's basketball crushed Pfeiffer University 94-77 in USA South Conference action on Tuesday afternoon at the Grant Center.
Averett (2-7, 2-1 USA South) built a double-digit lead late in the first half by beating Pfeiffer's full-court press, leading to open layups in transition. The Cougars also found a way to penetrate the Falcon defense in half-court sets for good looks, and Averett benefitted from 10 offensive rebounds which helped the Cougars outscore Pfeiffer 14-2 in second-chance points in the first half. Overall, Averett outrebounded the Falcons 26-9 over the first 20 minutes.Â
In the second half, Averett's lead over Pfeiffer (4-3, 0-2 USA South) grew to as much as 27 points multiple times before several late buckets helped the Falcons get their deficit back under 20.
Averett shot 56.1 percent for the game, including 61.1 percent in the first half and dominated the glass 52-19, which helped the Cougars finish with 22 second-chance points.
Junior
Timothy Henry scored a career-high 18 points to go with five rebounds, while junior
Vince Contreras netted his second career double-double with 15 points and a career-best 14 rebounds. Senior
Jalen Burnett and sophomore
Montre' Cash each added 14 points, with Cash dishing out a career-high six assists in the win. Sophomores
Raymond Bullock III and
Harrison Cochran and freshman
Isaiah Jones each finished with nine points. Bullock also had seven rebounds.
The Cougars never trailed at any point. Tied 14-14, Averett used a 10-3 run to build a small cushion midway through the first half and extended the lead to 54-36 by halftime.
Averett's defense also limited the conference's leading scorer, Kyle Riddley, to just eight points after he was averaging 36.3 points per game entering the contest.
Averett returns to action on Thursday when the Cougars travel to play Division I Longwood University at 7 p.m.
