FERRUM, Va. — Junior Brooke Carthon matched a career-high 23 points in Averett University's women's basketball's 66-64 wire-to-wire win over Centre College at the Ferrum College Invitational Monday afternoon. 
 
After leading by as many as 11 points throughout the better portion of the fourth quarter. Averett would hang on to survive a late quarter run by the Colonels. 
 
Following an and-1 conversion by senior Alixis Roccia to give Averett an 11 point lead at 60-49, Centre (7-2) rattled off an 8-1 run to cut the Cougars lead to 61-58. 
 
Averett (5-4) benefited from a basket by senior Amani Ajayi and several clutch free throws down the wire to pick up the teams first win over Centre in three tries. 
 
The Cougars would battle back being down 14-9 with just over two minutes in the 1st quarter to tie the game at 16-16 heading into the second quarter. 
 
Both Carthon and junior Ravyn Johnson would explode in the second quarter giving the Cougars a 34-26 advantage at halftime. 
 
The third quarter would also belong to Carthon as the junior netted nine of her 23 points to give Averett a 52-43 edge heading into the final quarter of play.
 
Johnson would finish with 12 points and four rebounds on the afternoon, while Roccia added seven points and three assists. In addition to Carthon's game-high 23 points the junior hauled in a game-high nine boards.
 
Averett returns to the hardwood tomorrow afternoon at 1 p.m. as they close out the Ferrum College Invitational with a meeting with USA South foe Maryville College.
