Lunsford's layup lifts Averett over Randolph in thrilling victory

DANVILLE, Va. — Freshman Camryn Lunsford snatched the inbound pass and hit the layup with 4.8 seconds remaining to give the Averett University women's basketball team an 81-80 victory over Randolph College on Sunday in the Grant Center.

Averett (6-5, 2-1 USA South) trailed Randolph (3-8, 1-3 ODAC) by as many as seven points in the fourth quarter before mounting the late comeback. Junior Brooke Carthon scored a career-high 33 points, which is also the fifth-highest total in a single game in school history, to go along with nine rebounds with 11 made shots and 11 made free throws. Meanwhile, junior Kiara Smith tied her career-high with 16 points and Amani Ajayi tied a career-high with 17 rebounds while scoring 12 points for the double-double.

Averett started off hot, as Lunsford, who made her fourth straight start, got two steals early, both of which led to baskets from Carthon. Averett went on to end with first quarter with an 18-12 lead over Randolph, with Carthon accounting for 11 of those points on 5-7 shooting.

The Cougars cooled off in the second quarter, though, as Randolph opened the quarter on a 6-1 run to cut Averett's lead to one point. It went back and forth from there, with the Wildcats taking a lead late in the half to head into the locker room with a 32-31 lead.

Randolph built off that momentum to start the second half, going on a 10-0 run to take a 42-31 lead early on. However, Smith heated up from there, scoring eight points on three possessions to get Averett back in striking distance. Carthon also started to do some more damage, particularly from the free throw line, as the Cougars fought back to take a 55-53 lead at the end of the third quarter.

The Wildcats once again got hot to start the fourth quarter, jumping out to a 75-68 lead with just 3:27 remaining in the game. However, the Cougars clawed their way back as Smith hit her fourth 3-pointer of the game to make it a two-point game with 1:29 remaining. Free throws from Lunsford and Carthon then gave Averett a 79-78 lead with just 24.6 seconds on the clock. Randolph regained the lead with a layup from Dominique Jackson with just 6.9 seconds remaining. Following the timeout, Lunsford then grabbed the inbound pass from junior Samantha Tecson and hit the layup to give Averett the 81-80 lead with 4.8 seconds left and held on for the win.

Up next for the Cougars is a road game against Salem College on Jan. 2 at 6 p.m.
