Baseball drops two to Southern Virginia

DANVILLE, Va. — Averett University baseball dropped both games of its doubleheader Thursday to Southern Virginia University at Owen-Fulton Field. The Cougars lost 4-0 in the home opener, then fell 5-3 in 12 innings.

Averett (1-4) battled back from a 3-0 deficit in Game 2, getting within two runs when junior Kyle VIdano scored in the fourth inning. The Cougars knotted the game in the sixth on junior Corey Wall's two-run single through the left side, scoring freshman Nick Taylor and Vidano, who both reached on errors.

The two teams remained deadlocked until Averett had a chance to get a walk-off win in the 11th. With two on, including the winning run at third, Southern Virginia (3-3) got an inning-ending pop-up to right-center. The Knights then struck in the top of the 12 th. A leadoff walk followed by a bunt single put two on, and a hit batter loaded the bases. Averett then walked in the go-ahead run and Southern Virginia tacked on an insurance run with an infield groundout to go in front 5-3.

Averett went down in order in the bottom half of the inning to give the Knights the win.

Senior Dallas Smithers pitched five scoreless innings of relief to highlight the Cougars' efforts in the second game.

One inning hurt Averett in the opener. With the bases loaded, Cole Critchfield singled two left-center, bringing in two runs to put the Knights on the board. Then an Averett throwing error on a rundown play at home helped two more runs score later in the inning.

Vidano had two of Averett's four hits in the opener.

Averett hosts non-conference foe Lynchburg College on Sunday at 1 p.m.
