MT. AIRY, Ga. — Averett University softball lost a pair of games at the Piedmont College Classic on Friday. The Cougars fell 2-1 to Millsaps College before dropping the nightcap 6-1 to No. 19 Berry College.
Averett (1-3) opened the day with a tough 2-1 loss to Millsaps (5-1). The Majors broke a 1-1 tie in the bottom of the seventh inning with a walk-off, RBI bloop single to center field that scored the game-winning run from third with one out.
The Cougars got on the board in the sixth inning. Sophomore Mallory Griffiths reached on a bunt single and moved to second when sophomore Kaitlyn Aherron drew a walk. Freshman Ashley Carbajal followed with an RBI single up the middle to put Averett ahead 1-0.
Millsaps answered in the bottom of the sixth with a two-out RBI single to right field. The Majors then won it the next inning with the help of a leadoff double.
The Cougars finished the day against nationally ranked Berry (5-0). A pair of RBI singles gave the Vikings a 2-0 lead in the second, and they added two more runs in the third to take a four-run lead. After Berry added another run in the fourth, Averett broke through in the sixth. Aherron led off with a single and later stole second base, putting her in position to score on sophomore Nicole Cauthen's single.
Up 5-1, Berry tacked on another insurance run in the seventh.
???????Averett returns to action next Friday when the Cougars begin play at the three-day Triangle Softball Classic in Cary, North Carolina.
