CARY, N.C. — Averett University softball picked up a 6-4 win over Mississippi University for Women to finish the second day of play at the Triangle Classic on Saturday. Earlier in the day, the Cougars fell to Lynchburg College 6-5.
Â
Down 2-1 against Mississippi, Averett put together a four-run third inning. Sophomore Kaitlyn Aherron led off the frame with a solo homer. With the bases loaded, freshman Ashley Carbajal was hit by a pitch to bring in the go-ahead run and sophomore Breanna Murphy then smacked a two-run double.
Â
The Owls scored two in the fifth to get within 5-4, but Averett added another insurance run in the sixth on sophomore Nicole Cauthen's RBI single.
Â
Aherron went 3-for-4 with three RBIs and Cauthen had two hits.
Â
Against Lynchburg, Averett took a 5-4 lead in the top of the sixth. Freshman Makenzie Collins smacked a one-out homer, and Aherron later drove in junior
Taylor Hodges with an RBI double. However, the lead didn't hold as Lynchburg got a pair of RBI doubles in the bottom of the seventh for a walk-off win.
Â
The teams traded two runs in the first inning. The Cougars inched ahead 3-2 when junior
Andrea Grant scored on a passed ball. The Hornets plated a run in both the fourth and fifth innings before Averett retook the lead in the sixth.
Â
Aherron, sophomore Brianna Harris, Collins and Hodges each had two hits for Averett against Lynchburg.
Â
Averett plays Hood College and No. 1 Virginia Wesleyan University on Sunday.
