Baseball falls to Bridgewater in non-conference action

DANVILLE, Va. — The Averett University baseball team fell to Bridgewater College on Wednesday afternoon, 20-4.

Bridgewater (5-1) jumped out to an early lead in the top of the first inning after the Eagles took advantage of two Cougar errors by plating four runs on four hits. Averett (2-10) threatened in the bottom half with a man on third with less than two outs, but could not bring him home and cut into the deficit.

Brett Jones hit an RBI-single to center in Bridgewater's second at bat to extend their lead to 5-0. Averett put three runs on the board in the bottom half of the second to bring the score to 5-3. With runners on the corners and two outs, consecutive hits from junior Kyle Vidano and senior Dallas Smithers brought home two runs. Smithers would get caught in a pickle on the ensuing batter trying to steal second, however Vidano scored from third before the tag was applied on Smithers to bring Averett within two on the scoreboard.

After being held scoreless in the third inning, Bridgewater collected a run in the fourth, five in the fifth and two in the sixth to push their lead to 13-3. The Cougars plated a run in the bottom of the sixth to make it 13-4. Vidano poked a ball down the right field line, scoring freshman Tyler Bianco from second.

The Eagles would add seven more runs while keeping Averett from scoring the rest of the way as the Cougars fell to Bridgewater, 20-4.

Vidano finished 3-for-4 at the plate with two RBIs and Smithers went 1-for-3 with an RBI of his own. Averett matched Bridgewater with 16 hits and left 11 runners on base.

The Cougars will go on the road to Ferrum, Virginia to take on Ferrum College in a three game series. The first game will be on Friday at 6 p.m.
