DANVILLE, Va. — Averett University women's lacrosse fell 12-9 to conference foe Greensboro College on Wednesday night on Daly Field at Frank R. Campbell Stadium.
Averett (1-4, 1-3 USA South) rallied to take a 9-7 lead with nine minutes to play after scoring five consecutive goals — including three by freshman
Elizabeth Peasley — in a little more than eight-minute stretch. Although the momentum shifted into the Cougars' favor for the moment, Greensboro (2-2, 1-0 USA South) responded with what turned out to be a game-decided barrage of goals.
The Pride finished the game with five unanswered scores over the final six-plus minutes to jump back in front and hold off Averett down the stretch.
After giving up an early goal, Averett senior
Alixis Roccia scored two goals in less than 30 seconds to put the Cougars on top. Greensboro shot back in front 5-3 before Peasley netted the second of five goals in the final seconds of the half.
Greensboro controlled the early part of the second half, adding two goals by Peyton Joyce to extend its lead to 7-4 before Averett made its big run. Roccia got the Cougars within two, and Peasley added three goals, mixed in with a goal by freshman
Xasia Lewis, to help Averett go in front.
Peasley's five goals give her 18 on the season. Roccia finished with a hat trick, while Lewis had one goal and a pair of assists. Freshman
Haley Boardway led the team with five ground balls and three caused turnovers. Freshman goalkeeper
Breanne Sawall finished with 11 saves.
