DANVILLE, Va. — The Averett University men's basketball team sailed to a 92-77 conference win over Huntingdon College on Saturday evening at the Grant Center.

Huntingdon (8-11, 2-9 USA South) came out with a 6-0 lead on fastbreak 3-pointer from T.C. Elmore in the opening minutes. Averett (9-10, 4-7 USA South) came back and took the lead on a made jumper from sophomore Jamal Forde. The Cougars continued to build momentum throughout the period. With 10 seconds remaining in the half, junior T.J. McAllister had a steal, which set up his assist to sophomore Timothy Henry for a fast-break layup to go into halftime with a 10-point lead, 38-28.

After the break, Henry set the tone early for the Cougars with a layup assisted by freshman Harrison Cochran. Averett continued to extend its lead to a game-high 19 points a little more than five minutes into the second half with a 3-pointer from junior Austin DeLucia. Huntingdon pulled within nine points with under four minutes to play, but Averett held the Hawks off the rest of the way.

The Cougars drained 10 3-pointers as a team, including four by Forde, who led the Cougars with a career-high 20 points to go with five rebounds. DeLucia hit three 3-pointers to give him 13 points. Senior James Contreras Jr. added 11 points and five rebounds. Senior Darin Ketner and junior Jalen Burnett each finished with 10 points.

Kyante Pines had 18 points and eight rebounds leading the way for the Hawks. Brandon McLean followed with 17 points and 13 rebounds.

Averett returns to home action on Sunday with a conference matchup against LaGrange College at 2 p.m.
