SALEM, Va. — Averett University softball dropped a pair of non-conference games to Roanoke College on Thursday evening. Roanoke took the first game 8-0 in five innings before scoring late to win 4-1 in the nightcap.
In Game 2, senior
Amanda Wright helped put Averett (6-14) on the scoreboard in the top of the fourth. Wright cracked a triple to right field and later scored thanks to an error on a fielder's choice. Yet, Roanoke (9-7) responded with an RBI double in the bottom half of the frame.
The game remained tied 1-1 until the sixth when Roanoke inched ahead on an RBI double. The Maroons loaded the bases and extended their lead to 4-1 on a two-run single moments later to help pull away.
Wright finished with two of Averett's three hits in the second game. Sophomore Breanna Murphy had the other hit.
In the opener, Roanoke jumped out to a 4-0 lead to take control. The Maroons added another run in the second and three more in the fifth to end the game. Only three of Roanoke's eight runs were earned. Meanwhile, the Maroons limited Averett to just one hit over five innings — a double by Wright in the second.
Averett travels to play conference foe Meredith College at 1 p.m.
