Baseball ends Covenant series with dominating win

LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN, Ga. — Averett University baseball picked up a 12-5 win over Covenant College on Friday afternoon to complete the series.

In the third inning Averett (7-17, 3-6 USA South) started a scoring rally with four runs. With the bases loaded sophomore Chase McKinney hit a three-run double down the left field line to give his team the lead. The Cougars would score McKinney on a sacrifice fly from senior Dallas Smithers. In the fourth inning Covenant (9-13, 7-5 USA South) would cut the lead in half scoring two runs on a homerun from Trenton Nobles.

The Cougars would continue their scoring spree with five more runs in the sixth inning to give the score of 9-2. It all started when junior Neil Hutchens tripled to center field scoring sophomore Cody Jones. Sophomore Zack DeCarlo scored Hutchens on a single to shortstop to extend the lead. Junior Kyle Vidano and McKinney would keep the rally going each with back-to-back doubles scoring one run apiece. Senior Bradley Tickle would end the sixth inning scoring with a single to right field scoring McKinney.

Averett would score one run in each of the remaining innings. The Scots would try to chip away at the deficit scoring three in the eighth inning but it was not enough.

DeCarlo and Hutchens led the way with three hits. Vidano, McKinney, and freshman Ryan Traylor each followed with two hits. Mckinney also led the way in scoring with five RBI's.

Junior Matt Tuggle will get the win; his record is now (2-3). Freshman Tanner Bradshaw will receive the save.

The Cougars will return home to face non-conference Christopher Newport University on Sunday, March 18, at 2 p.m.
