DANVILLE, Va. — Methodist University used a flurry of second-half goals to come from behind and edge Averett University 14-9 in USA South Conference women's lacrosse action Saturday on Daly Field at Frank R. Campbell Stadium.
Averett (5-5, 1-4 USA South), which led 6-5 at halftime, took an 8-6 advantage on sophomore
Abby Taylor's goal at the 25:36 mark of the second half. However, Methodist (5-4, 4-1 USA South) responded with five consecutive goals in less than a 10-minute span to take control with an 11-8 lead.
The Cougars broke their scoring drought with senior
Alixis Roccia's fourth goal of the day with 6:42 remaining, which got Averett back within 11-9. Yet, Methodist tacked on three more insurance goals over the final four-plus minutes to hold on and snap the Cougars' four-game winning streak.
Averett opened with a 2-1 lead in the first few minutes of the game — one each by Roccia and freshman
Elizabeth Peasley. Methodist countered with three goals to go back in front 4-2. Roccia and Peasley each scored two more goals to push the Cougars back in front 6-4 before the Monarchs scored in the final seconds of the period to get within one by halftime.
???????Roccia totaled four goals and one assist, while Peasley had three goals. Taylor and freshman
Xasia Lewis each had one goal. Roccia also led the team with seven ground balls, while Lewis had a team-high five draw controls.
Freshman
Breanne Sawall had 14 saves in goal.
???????Averett hosts Juniata College on Wednesday at 4 p.m.
