Softball drops two against non-conference Emory & Henry


DANVILLE, Va. — The Averett University softball team fell 2-0 to Emory & Henry College on Tuesday afternoon in a non-conference matchup. The Wasps defeated the Cougars 6-2  in the first matchup and 6-2 in the second.
 
In the first game, Emory & Henry  (21-3) scored two runs in the second inning to get them out in front first. Averett (14-20) cut the lead in half when senior Amanda Wright singled through the left side scoring sophomore Kaitlyn Aherron making it 2-1.
 
In the fourth inning the Wasps scored three runs including a single by Erin Anderson to score a run extending her teams lead to 5-1. Emory & Henry would score again in the sixth inning to give its final run of the game. In the bottom of the seventh inning the Cougars would score one more run but it would not be enough.
 
Aherron led the Cougars with three hits, freshman Ashley Carbajal added two hits to the teams total.
 
In Game 2, the Wasps got on the board first scoring a run on a single to left field. Averett followed suit when freshman Makenzie Collins scored on junior Essence Pulliam's double down the line to tie the game at 1-1 in the second inning. In the fourth and fifth inning the Wasps took the lead adding five runs to its score. In the seventh inning sophomore Nicole Cauthen singled up the middle scoring Wright adding a run to give a final score of 6-2.
 
The Cougars had a total of four hits from Aherron, Cauthen, Pulliam and junior Andrea Grant. Cauthen and Pulliam ach added one RBI apiece.
 
The Cougars will start the first round of playoffs in a best-of-three series on Saturday,April 7. Averett will face N.C. Wesleyan College at 2 p.m. in a doubleheader and will play an if necessary game on Sunday.
