DANVILLE, Va. — The Averett University men's lacrosse team dropped their home finale of the 2018 regular season to Huntingdon College, 16-2.
Freshman
Keshawn Downing registered both of Averett's goals in the third quarter. The Fort Belvoir, Virginia, native scored the first goal with 9:25 remaining in the quarter. Downing beat a double team on the far side of the field and then fired his shot inside the far post to get the Cougars on the board. The second goal came with time running out. Downing picked up a loose ball going away from goal and then raced towards net. He was able to create an open lane and with it shot a ball off the ground and into the back of the net for his second tally of the day.
The Hawks built their lead gradually throughout the game as they scored three in the first quarter, five in the second, five in the third and then three in the fourth for the 16-2 victory.
In addition to his two goals, Downing collected eight ground balls which ties his season-high. Freshman
Rafael Walker also tied his season-high in ground balls with five as freshman
Joonas Mattila increased his total to four in the effort. Freshman
Jacob Shriver finished with 14 saves in goal.
Averett ends their inaugural campaign in a non-conference road matchup with Randolph College on Monday, April 23. Game time is set for 7 p.m.
