SALEM, Va. — Averett University baseball took No. 4 Roanoke College to extra innings, but the Maroons came away with a 6-5 win in the 10th on Monday night as the Cougars' season came to a close.
Roanoke (21-6) scored three runs in the bottom of the eighth to take a 5-2 advantage. Yet, Averett (10-28) bounced right back against the nationally ranked Maroons in the top of the ninth. The Cougars opened the inning with back-to-back singles, and two runs came around to score on sophomore Chase McKinney's single through the left side, which was aided by a fielding error by the left fielder. McKinney eventually took third on a wild pitch and scored on junior A.J. Hart's sac fly to tie the game.
Roanoke, however, got its offense going in the bottom of the 10th. The Maroons got a leadoff single, and added another single while trying to bunt the runner over. Roanoke then sacrificed the runners into scoring position. Averett intentionally walked the next batter to load the bases and set up a force play at home or a double play up the middle. But Cody Shell came through with a walk-off single to win the game.
Roanoke led 1-0 in the fourth, but the Cougars grabbed a 2-1 advantage with a pair of runs in the sixth. The Maroons tied it in the seventh with an RBI double and then tacked on three runs in the eighth before Averett's comeback to force extra innings.
The Cougars totaled seven hits, including two by senior Dallas Smithers.
Senior Patrick Long pitched seven strong innings, striking out nine while allowing just two runs — one earned — in his final collegiate appearance and didn't factor into the decision.
