DANVILLE, Va. — Averett University women's soccer senior goalkeeper
Bailee Brown broke the program's career saves record in the Cougars' 3-0 non-conference loss to Randolph-Macon College Sunday evening on Daly Field at Frank R. Campbell Stadium.
Brown impressed in net for the Cougars, turning away 13 shot attempts in the first half and pulling within two saves of the career record through the first 45 minutes of play.
The Yellow Jackets finished the evening with a 65-2 shot advantage, landing 24 attempts on goal and finding the back of the net three times.
Randolph-Macon (2-0) struck for their first goal of the contest 25 minutes into action when Nicole Czyzweski laced a shot from the left of the box, beating Brown to the far post. The Yellow Jackets added to their advantage 15 minutes later when Tyria Smalls played a pass from Erin Lee in the box that beat the outstretched Brown to the far post.
Averett (0-2) nearly got into the scoring action midway through the second half when
Emily Meador collected a breakaway ball just outside the box forcing Yellow Jackets goalkeeper Edye Carr to make a goal-saving grab. Senior
Eimear Reddin supplied the Cougars' final shot attempt of the match in the final minutes, playing a free ball from the right side of the box that just missed the far corner of the net.
Randolph-Macon added another goal with just over 15 minutes remaining in regulation when Mary Virginia Kelley headed a ball of the cross bar that Czyzewski rebounded and fired to the back of the net for her second score of the game.
Brown finished the second half with eight saves, sliding past Tunisa Bumphus for the most saves in school history. Bumphus's record of 372 career saves had stood since the 2007 season.
Averett is schedule to return back to the pitch for the first of five straight road matchups beginning with Bridgewater College at 4 p.m. on Sept. 5.
