DANVILLE, Va. — A big run in the second half helped Maryville College overcome a halftime deficit to top Averett University 68-51 in USA South Conference men's basketball action on Friday night at the Grant Center.
Averett (3-13, 3-5 USA South) led by three at the half and held a 37-34 advantage four minutes into the second period before Maryville (10-6, 6-3 USA South) made its move. The Scots rattled off a 22-3 run over the next nine minutes to take a commanding 56-40 lead with less than seven minutes to play.
Maryville shot 57.7 percent from the floor in the second half to aid its comeback.
The second half was a stark contrast from the first 20 minutes as the two teams battled in a highly contested first half. Averett inched out to a 15-8 advantage in the first seven minutes on a three-point play by sophomore
Raymond Bullock III. Maryville used a 9-2 run to tie it before briefly taking the lead. The Cougars closed the period with three made free throws to enter halftime with a 32-29 lead.
Averett was led offensively by junior
Timothy Henry, who finished with 13 points and five rebounds. Bullock added 10 points and seven boards and freshman
Isaiah Jones totaled seven points, five rebounds and three blocks.
Averett returns to action on Saturday when the Cougars play host conference foe Covenant College at 4 p.m. on Alumni Day.
