DANVILLE, Va. — The Averett University women's basketball scored a season-high 86 points, beating Salem College 86-62 in a complete team effort Tuesday evening in USA South Conference action.
Averett (12-7, 8-3 USA South) closed out the first quarter in strong fashion, using a 15-9 run to erase a 7-2 early deficit to take a 17-15 lead at the end of the opening frame.
The Cougars would not trail again following the opening frame as they used a 19-12 second quarter run to close out the half and take a 36-27 lead into the intermission.
Following an early Cougars run to open the third quarter of play, Salem (1-18, 1-10 USA South) narrowed Averett's lead to 12 points at the end of the third quarter at 58-46.
However, Averett ended the final quarter of action with a 28-16 run to finish the game with its highest point total of the season.
Four Cougars finished Tuesday evening's contest with double-digit scoring numbers as junior
Brooke Carthon finished with a team-high 16 points and freshman
Camryn Lunsford tied a career-high with 13 points.
Senior
Amani Ajayi collected a game-high 12 rebounds, while Carthon and junior
Ravyn Johnson each pulled down nine boards. Senior
Alixis Roccia dished out a game-high five assists.
With the win, head coach
Liz Hudy earned career win No. 99 putting her one win away from the century mark for her career and five away from the all-time program record.
The Cougars return back the hardwood Wednesday, Jan. 23 as they host Mary Baldwin University at 6 p.m.
