Women's basketball collects third consecutive victory with win over Meredith

DANVILLE, Va. — The Averett University women's basketball team picked up their third consecutive victory with a 72-56 win over Meredith College.

Meredith (1-13, 1-4 USA South) came out and controlled the first three minutes of the game as the Avenging Angels held a 6-4 lead with 6:51 remaining in the first quarter. This however, would be the last time that Meredith would lead in the game as the Cougars went on a 15-5 run to finish the first quarter ahead, 19-11. In that span of time, junior Brooke Carthon had nine points to lead all Averett  (8-5, 4-1 USA South) scrorers.

The Avenging Angels were able to cut into the Cougar lead in the first few minutes of the second quarter. With 5:52 left in the first half, Averett only led Meredith 23-21. Alike in the first half, Averett went on an 11-4 run to end the second quarter. After a Meredith turnover with 16 seconds left, Carthon hit a jumper with two seconds left to give Averett the 34-25 halftime lead.

In the third quarter, Meredith was able to trim the Averett edge to seven points twice but the Cougars kept the Avenging Angels at bay, holding a 51-40 lead heading into the fourth quarter. During the last frame, Averett did not let their lead slip into single digits. Freshman Rana Davis-Robinson grabbed an offensive rebound and made the ensuing putback to give the Cougars their largest lead of the game at 72-50 with 2:04 left. Meredith added a few baskets in the last couple of minutes, but it was too late as Averett won the game, 72-56.

Carthon finished the game with 24 points and two assists while senior Alixis Roccia had 12 points and four assists.

Freshman Genesis Weiters chipped in career highs with six points and five rebounds.

Averett returns to the floor on Sunday, Jan. 6, when William Peace University comes to town for a conference tilt. Tip off is set for 2 p.m.
