DANVILLE, Va. — The Averett University volleyball team split its USA South Conference tri-match with Pfeiffer University an William Peace University on Saturday, winning 3-0 over Pfeiffer before dropping a highly contested 3-1 decision to William Peace.
Game 1:
Averett (16-12, 13-2 USA South) came out swinging to open the first game of Saturday's tri-match winning 25-18 in Set 1 backed by a .237 team hitting percentage.
The Cougars continued their opening set momentum with a 25-19 Set 2 victory, racking up 18 kills in the frame and hitting .292 against Pfeiffer (12-13, 3-10 USA South)
Set 3 would be all Averett as well as the Cougars rolled to a 25-18 set victory with 16 set kills and only three attacking errors.
Freshman
Lauren Montren led the charge offensively for the Cougars racking up 14 kills and an impressive .333 attack percentage from the outside.
Additionally, freshman
Morgan Barnes collected nine kills and only one attach error, while senior
Madison Dadez and sophomore
Sarah Shropshire tallied eight kills apiece.
Freshman
Meg Hopkins recorded 38 assists, while junior
Myka Patterson paced team with a match-high 21 digs.
Game 2:
William Peace (19-7, 9-4 USA South) and Averett would battle out in the final game of Saturday's tri-match as the matchup between two of the conference's teams would be a battle for every point.
The Pacers managed to at an early 2-0 edge over the Cougars winning Set 1 25-20 and Set 2 by the final of 25-21.
However, Averett would hang on to win Set 3 28-26 as the Cougars led the third frame 24-21, but the Pacers rolled off three straight points to even the set 24-24. Averett regained the lead at 25-14 on a Shropshire kill, but back-to-back kills by the Pacers Abby Benton gave William Peace a slight 26-25 edge.
Freshman
Giselle Harris tied the match on the next rally off a Hopkins assist, while a Dadez block and a set clinching kill from Shropshire sealed the 28-26 Set 3 victory.
However, the Pacers rebounded in Set 4 and an early set run propelled the squad to a 25-17 game clinching win.
Montren finished the contest tied for the match-high with 21 kills, also collecting 25 digs. While Shropshire collected double-digit kills and digs with 12 and 21, respectively.
Harris collected eight kills and six digs, both career highs, while Hopkins added 44 assists and 22 digs, while Patterson finished with 27 scoops.
The Cougars return to action on Wednesday when they close out the 2019 USA South regular-season with a crucial matchup against Greensboro College at 7 p.m. Wednesday will also be senior night for Averett as it will recognize the careers of both Dadez and
Harper Scollo.
